High deleterious mutation rate distorts site frequency spectrum in mammals and leads to erroneous inference of demographic expansions
Methods that infer population history from the site frequency spectrum treat departures from the neutral expectation as demographic signal. In mammals, where the deleterious mutation rate is high, selection distorts the spectrum in ways that mimic demographic change.
This project characterizes that distortion and shows how it can lead to spurious inference of population expansion.
